About Story Street

The Story Street Authors
Kaye Umansky

I'm Kaye, and I write all of the Strange Street stories and some of the other Story Street books.

1. How long have you been a writer for?

Fifteen years

2. What made you become a writer?

It's the thing I like doing best - next to reading. Sometimes I enjoy it MORE than reading!

3. What are your top tips for becoming a writer?

Read lots of books and ignore what is going on around you.

4. How does it feel to know that lots of children enjoy reading your stories?

Wonderful! Like being given a big chocolate ice-cream with raspberry sauce. It makes me very happy.

5. What do you like best about writing Story Street?

The money!! No, seriously, I enjoy sending the characters off on fantastic adventures.

6. Which Story Street character do you like writing about most?

I'm very fond of Pip - he makes me laugh.

7. If you could look after any of the Story Street animals, which would it be and why?

Fatcat. I'm a cat lover (I've got three - Alfie, Charley and Tilly).

8. Where would you most like to visit in Story Street?

The Secret Room

9. Would you rather have Miss Cherry or Mr Hopkins as a teacher?

Impossible to choose!

10. Do you prefer writing the fantasy Strange Street stories, or the 'normal' world stories?

I enjoy the Strange Street stories best. I love sending children off into fantastic worlds.

11. If you could press the Magic Button, where would you like the lift to take you?

To an enchanted forest, with witches and wizards and goblins - as long as the lift took me home when things got too scary.

12. What is your favourite children's book?

The Hobbit

13. What is your favourite children's film?

The Wizard of Oz
